The body’s natural oils helps hydrate the skin and keep it supple and elastic. But some people can have skin that is too oily, particularly, in the face, neck and shoulder areas. And this can lead to breakouts or acne.
But managing oily skin can be done internally and topically.
Internally, you need to watch the food and drinks that you put into your body.
Foods high in fat, oil or sugar may have a negative effect on your skin and cause pimples.
So try to avoid greasy foods (burgers, French fries, fried chicken pizza, hot dogs, fast food, etc.) and high-sugar things such as candy and soda.
You see, when you consume foods or beverages that are high in fat or sugar, the body tries to burn off the sugar you just ate by metabolizing it. By doing this, your liver stops burning lipids (fat) and starts to get rid of them by making its way up to the sebaceous glands and secretes the fat in liquid form: Sebum (a/k/a oil). When your blood sugar gets too high, the body then releases androgens into the bloodstream, which also causes the skin to become oily. Hence, breakouts and/or acne.
Topically, you should take care of your skin. Wash it at least twice per day (morning and night) to clean off any toxins and cosmetics. Using a light daily facial scrub will help keep pores clean and reduce blackheads and pimples. In addition, using an astringent to close the pores after you wash, will help keep out new dirt or bacteria from entering the pores and causing breakouts.
Then using a good, hypo-allergenic daily cream with SPF 30 or higher will help hydrate your skin and keep it protected during the day from ultraviolet rays. This helps combat premature aging and sun burn (which can lead to skin cancer).
Ladies: To help reduce oily skin pay close attention to the skin creams and foundation you are using. Read the labels and look at the ingredients. Try to use cosmeceuticals that are hypo-allergenic. Look for sunscreens, foundations, and lotions that are oil-free and won’t clog pores.
Gentlemen: When using sunscreens, lotions, aftershave, and shaving creams, look at products that are for ‘sensitive’ skin and are free of harsh chemicals that may cause breakouts or oily skin. Also use lotions that are oil-free.
What about facial masks?
Clay masks can be good to tighten skin and help alleviate oil, but like anything, use in moderation. You don’t want to over-dry your skin. In addition, if notice you have oily skin on select areas, such as forehead or nose, then apply the clay mask on those areas alone and not you’re entire face.
If you’re watching what goes in your body and on your skin and still notice you’re skin is too oily, it’s recommended to see your dermatologist or medical provider for a check-up. There may be an underlying issue that can only be determined through examination or blood work.
